1996 - 1997 List of Accomplishments

97- Constructed osprey platforms for PSE&G and demonstrated our erection technique on Cohansey River sites. Included students in the construction of osprey platforms for a service project these nests will be used on the Cohansey as well. These are our first nests outside of the Maurice River watershed.

97- Provided Liberty State Park with an osprey platform for a display on NJ raptor recovery.

97- Ten year anniversary of Raptor Waterfowl Surveys.

97- Assisted NJ Division of FGW and University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center in the capture and outfitting of an osprey with a satellite transmitter for a migration study. The tracking will identify important wintering areas and habitats used in migration.

97- Selected to receive DEP Watershed Management Public Education and Outreach Grant from NJ DEP Environmental Services Program to create a Teacher’s Guide to accompany “Down Jersey” film for use in upper elementary and lower secondary schools. Distributed over 200 copies of “Down Jersey” to mayors, boards, members, non profit organizations, civic groups and the like.

96- The Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation gives CU a monetary award as a result of the Morie Sand habitat restoration project receiving a philanthropy award.

96- CU objects to a Low Level Radioactive Waste facility being placed in Cumberland County. CU salutes the volunteer nature of process of siting the facitily but votes thanks but no thanks.

96- Assisted Cumberland County Office of Planning and Development in a tour of the Maurice River by the NJ Division of Travel and Tourism.

96- 97 - Co produced 2 films; “Down Jersey” (30 minute and shortened 15 minute visitor film) with NJN and the National Park Service, New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail Route. Funding provided by a NJ DEP & National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Local Coastal Planning Grant, CU, NPS, and PSE&G. Organized live premier of film 450+ attendees at Cumberland County College. “Down Jersey” is a film on the Cultural Heritage of the Delaware Bayshore in New Jersey it has been aired numerous times on NJN.

96- CU Chaired committee of Stockton Alliance which hosted State wide Ecotourism Conference at Stockton State College, over 100 participants and over 30 guest speakers

96-97 CU expands osprey colony to include inland lakes- Willow Grove & Centerton. A platform is erected at the new Audubon Center in Goshen.

96- Survival of Species receives PBS Emmy.
