New Jersey Conservation Foundation - Conservation Plan for the Manumuskin River Watershed & Charting a Course

One of the most comprehensive documents to which Citizens United contributed is New Jersey Conservation Foundation’s Conservation Plan for the Manumuskin River Watershed. This document provides an analysis of the Manumuskin River’s resources, and a vision of how those resources might be preserved. It covers both natural and cultural resource values. The inventory includes; climate, geology, hydrology, vegetation, botany, herpetology, mammals, ornithology, fishes, historic resources and more.

This resource survey further contributed to a planning guide entitled, Charting a Course

for the Delaware Bay Watershed published by New Jersey Conservation Foundation, and written by Harriet B. Honigfeld. The conservation community hopes to preserve the character of the New Jersey Delaware Bayshore. This text gives a background and framework for accomplishing this mission. It makes the “connections between the region’s natural systems - its coastline, tributaries, headwaters, farmland and forests - while enhancing the health and vigor of the human system of communities, infrastructure, commerce, and historic and cultural landmarks and attractions.” The ability to fulfill the ambitious mission is yet to be seen and rests in the fortitude of this and future generations of Bayshore residents.

The New Jersey Nature Conservancy’s Bayshore Office links a number of preserves within the region. Their Gandy’s Beach and Manumuskin Preserves are examples of some of the most important habitats in our area.
