Since 2009, CU Maurice River has been offering guided hikes along the City of Millville’s Maurice River Bicycle & Walking Trail. These walks meet at Waltman Park near the Brandriff Ave. entrance. Our naturalists normally integrate interpretation of flora, fauna, and cultural elements along the trek. We also offer a self-guided leaflet for this trail. It is available at our office in printed form, and includes a map of the route and an introduction to the park, the Maurice River, some local history, and descriptions of habitat types in the park. It also describes some things visitors can do on their outing, with ideas for children and families. Additionally, we offer two checklists for your enjoyment: a list of birds and a list of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians that you might spot along the trail. The guide, checklists, and even a scavenger hunt print-out are available at our office at 17 E. Main St. Millville, NJ 08332.
The park also acts as a launch site for our Tuesdays on the Fly. On these occasions we meet at the park and carpool to various locations. On a number of Wednesdays, spring through fall, CU naturalists host the Outdoor Explorers. This is a group from the Holly City Family Success Center, a non-profit neighbor near CU Maurice River’s office. These walks are open to our members and the community and are held solely in Waltman Park. For a schedule of upcoming nature walks, check out our calendar of events.
